Tried it. 80MB ARC, reads are AWFUL for media. You hit disk for every block. With 500GB on what is probably a single rust disk or crowded SSD on that $18 plan? You're waiting.
ext4 or XFS if you want to feel fancy. XFS doesn't need tuning for big files.
BuyVM LU to Miami iperf3 I get 400-600mbit. Not amazing not terrible. InterServer Secaucus should crush that for your parents lol.

Osaka here, I run XFS on a 512MB ConoHa plan. Quiet, no tuning, snapshots via LVM if I need them (I don't). The server is quiet, the filesystem is quiet, my room is quiet.
ZFS has its place. That place has more RAM.

I terraform therefore I am, and I state that ZFS on 512MB is a state of sin. My soul is in S3-compatible backends with versioning. The VPS is cattle, not pet, not archive.
Stockholm to Wasabi is 15ms. The VPS runs ext4, holds nothing, dies screaming, gets replaced.

Young man, in 1987 we did not have "snapshots." We had tape. Young man, you have 512MB and you want snapshots. Young man, use ext4 and rsync to another directory. Two spaces for clarity, young man.
That's not a snapshot, that's a copy. CoW matters when you have 500GB and want 10 "snapshots" on the same disk.
But yes, on 512MB, ext4. No argument. Just pointing out the difference.
GPU poor my electricity bill is a war crime and ZFS poor my RAM bill is a war crime. I have 64GB in my desktop, ZFS there is heaven. My VPS has 1GB, ZFS there is purgatory. 512MB would be hell. Tokyo electricity is ¥30/kWh, I feel this in my bones. ext4 on VPS, ZFS at home.
Budget King says: my Minecraft server ran on 512MB OpenVZ from 2019-2022. Not ZFS, not ext4, the host decided. I decided to upgrade to KVM and 1GB when the world got too big. Your media will get too big. Your RAM will not get bigger. Plan for the exit, not the entrance.
This. I was on the same InterServer 512MB storage, ZFS, thought I was clever. Hit 80% disk, ARC fighting with rsync, OOM killed. Migrated to ext4 in place (don't ask, it was ugly, involved a second VPS and scp). Never looked back.
The $18/yr is a trap if you spend hours tuning. My time is worth more.
