Should I prepay OVHcloud 3 years to save €100?

I got migrated to "equivalent" once. 2.4 GHz to 2.3 GHz, same core count, they called it equivalent. Took 6 months to get back to original speed tier. Never again.

3 years without testing your backup restore is 3 years of false confidence. Prepay or not, when they go down, your data is your problem.

I test restore quarterly. OVHcloud Strasbourg fire in 2021 taught people this — https://status.ovhcloud.com. Some customers lost everything because their "backup" was same datacenter.

Strasbourg fire is exactly why I said route is not risk. Datacenter risk is separate from billing risk. OVHcloud has 14 datacenters now. Fire was one building. Not same as provider vanishing.

1ms or I don't want it

Fire was one building but billing system was down for days. Could not provision new servers, could not access invoices. Operational risk is not just "did my disk survive."

This. I was stuck during that fire. Could not spin up replacement in Singapore because billing API was shared. 4 days downtime. Monthly or prepay, same problem when their platform chokes.

So if the big ones can still have fires and API outages, is there ANY safe way to prepay? Or is monthly the only smart move for beginners like me?

Beginners should do monthly. You don't know your needs yet. I started with 2 cores, now on 8. If I had 2 years left on a 2-core plan, I'd be paying to resell or abandon.

Prepay makes sense when your workload is stable and you have exit strategy. I do annual now, but only after 3 years of knowing exactly what I need.

Mumbai to OVHcloud Singapore is 78ms. To Hetzner Singapore is 65ms. Price difference is real but latency matters more for my users. I would prepay Hetzner 3 years before OVHcloud 3 years, if I prepaid at all.

Latency is not in the poll though. Tifiucem asked about trust and vanishing. But since we are here: Hetzner Singapore is new, limited stock, no auction servers. OVHcloud Singapore has been around longer, more stable inventory. If you need to replace a dead instance, Hetzner SG might have nothing available.

fio, iperf, geekbench. results or gtfo.

I run chaos engineering on my own stack. Prepay 3 years is chaos you cannot control. I would rather pay premium for monthly and keep the option to migrate when something better appears.

Last year I moved 40 workloads from AWS to Hetzner. Took 3 weekends. If I had 2 years prepaid, that move costs double.
