Should I prepay OVHcloud 3 years to save €100?

How far ahead do you guys renew your VPS bro

I used to do monthly because I dont trust anyone. But then I saw someone doing 3 year prepay for like $2.50/mo and I cant stop thinking about it

Made this poll

monthly paranoid - renew every month, sleep good at night
annual hustler - 12 months for the discount
decade prepayer - 3+ years, YOLO

I pay €7/mo at OVHcloud right now. If I prepay 3 years its €4.20/mo. Thats €100.80 saved! But what if they vanish?

OVHcloud (monthly): avg 34ms, route via cogent adds 8ms
Hetzner (annual): avg 28ms, route via he.net adds 4ms
Vultr (quarterly): avg 41ms, route via telia adds 15ms

Route via cogent adds 8ms on OVHcloud but their billing route is stable. Prepay risk is not latency risk. I do annual, route via he.net adds 4ms but price is locked. Check https://bgp.he.net for route details.

1ms or I don't want it

OVHcloud €7/mo:
CPU: 2x @ 2.4 GHz (score: 892)
Disk: 180 MB/s read (score: meh)
Net: 450 Mbit/s (score: okay)

Hetzner €4.20/mo (3yr):
CPU: 2x @ 2.6 GHz (score: 967)
Disk: 220 MB/s read (score: decent)
Net: 380 Mbit/s (score: meh network)

Decent disk IO, meh network. Prepay only if CPU matters more than pipe.

How do you know if a provider is gonna vanish? Is there like a warning sign or something? I just got my first vps last month and im on monthly but I see these deals and im tempted... sorry if this is dumb

I had same paranoia, prepaid a year and provider ghosted in month 4

Prepaying 3 years is not saving €100. It's lending OVHcloud €100 at 0% interest and hoping they don't default.

I did 2-year prepay with a German provider in 2019. They got acquired, new TOS, price "adjustment" voided my discount. Read the fine print. OVHcloud can change terms. Your €4.20 becomes €7 again with 30 days notice and you get store credit, not cash back.

Monthly is insurance. €100 over 36 months is €2.78/mo for sleep insurance. Cheap.

OVHcloud is French. French consumer law on prepaid services is strict. They cannot just void multi-year contracts with 30 days notice if you are an individual customer. Business accounts, different story. Check if your account is particulier or professionnel, that changes everything.

Wait really? I didnt know that. Im individual customer. So they cant raise on me if I lock 3 years?

They can raise on new services, new options, new regions. Your base plan is locked. But read the conditions particulieres. There is a clause about "evolution des prestations" that lets them migrate you to "equivalent or superior" hardware. Equivalent is subjective.
