RackNerd DropCatch: 6/12 wins, flat fee, API works

As far as I know, there is no comprehensive comparison of drop-catching services from the perspective of a small-scale operator. I am correcting this gap, at my own expense. Methodology: I targeted 40 deleted domains over six months, all with comparable metrics (dictionary words, .com, no trademark issues). Budget: $2,000 total, including service fees and backorders. Results:

  • SnapNames: 3/15 wins. Interface stable. Fees add up. As far as I know, they prioritize volume clients.
  • NameJet: 2/10 wins. Auction model means you pay even when you lose. To be precise, this is not drop-catching, it is gambling.
  • Pool: 1/8 wins. Acquired by private equity, service degraded. Support tickets unanswered for weeks.
  • RackNerd DropCatch (obscure European service): 6/12 wins. No auction. Flat fee. API is documented. GDPR-compliant by default, no data sharing clauses buried in terms.
Surprising winner: RackNerd. I expected consolidation to favor incumbents. Instead, a 12-person team in Tallinn outperformed on speed and transparency. Their API uses standard OAuth. I built monitoring in three hours. Total spend: $1,847. Value of lessons: debatable. I could have bought premium domains directly for less. Privacy note: SnapNames and NameJet both require phone verification with third-party services. RackNerd accepts email-only. To be precise, this matters under GDPR Article 5. I will not share my exact monitoring scripts. Build your own. The learning is the point.

Verify your restores

I used NameJet in 2023. Caught a domain. Paid. They "lost" it in transfer. Six weeks of tickets. Finally got it back with wrong nameservers. Pointed to a parked page for 48 hours. Lost a client.

Verify your restores. Verify your catches. Verify everything.

@Fritz48 RackNerd—have you tested their export process? Can you get auth codes out without talking to a human?

All caps all the time! Exclamation points for days! No lowercase ever!

I built my own drop catch for €50/month! OVHcloud VPS! https://www.ovhcloud.com/en/vps/ Custom python! Beats all of these services!

Two wins out of five last month! The obscure stuff is where the money is!

No auctions! No fees! Just raw sockets and caffeine!

RackNerd export without human contact—have you actually confirmed this works

Not RackNerd, but I tried KnownHost for a month. Auth codes were buried three menus deep and still needed a support ticket to unlock. Took 48 hours. Dumped them immediately.

This is why I run my own stack now. No ticket roulette. If the API breaks I fix it in ten minutes instead of waiting for some tier-1 rep to escalate.

Two wins out of five last month was with .org and .net drops by the way. Everyone chases .com scraps.

I haven't used RackNerd for drops specifically. My budget went to the established catchers. For what it's worth, I did move one catch to InterServer afterward and their auth code automation worked. YMMV.

Two of five is decent but that's a small sample. How do you handle registry rate limits on the polling side? That's where my DIY attempt died in 2022.

Still waiting on NameJet numbers from anyone else. My 2/10 might have been bad luck or bad timing. Hard to tell without more data points.

Wait, I need to walk back the ALL CAPS thing. That was a bit. Actual post:

I only push outbound through Leaseweb, so I can't speak to RackNerd's auth code flow. Their panel looks clean from the outside but I haven't paid them.

@Fritz48 did you ever solve the SnapNames volume-client thing? Did you try rotating accounts or is the tiering IP-based?

Has anyone actually tried KnownHost for this? I was looking at their API docs and the auth code endpoint is listed as "beta" with no SLA — https://status.knownhost.com

This is the real takeaway. I caught a domain through InterServer last year, transfer went fine, but their auto-renew flag was off by default and I nearly lost it at expiration

Five days quiet on a $2K thread feels wrong
