Provider review sites are gamed, only trust forum veterans

I have spent fourteen years in this address space and watched five generations of "review aggregators" come and go. Every single one. The current crop is no different. You know what I see when I visit these sites? Legacy IP thinking. Centralized trust models. NAT-level opacity about who funds the rankings.

What verification would actually work?

1. Look for posters who documented actual quota limits, not marketing numbers.
2. Check if they followed up six months later with "still working" or "terminated without notice."
3. Heads up: the same three accounts show up in every "best VPS 2025" roundup with identical phrasing.

I have tracked twelve "independent" review sites against forum threads here. Six of them published Hetzner as "editor's choice" the same week Hetzner ran a giveaway. Zero of those reviews mentioned the IPv6-only connectivity issues that forum users documented for eight months.

Structured verification I would trust:

- Specific outage dates matching provider status pages

I think Ivan has good point about address space metaphor. Is like, you need see whole route, not just last hop! I have been here two years, maybe not veteran, but I follow threads, I remember who helped with GreenCloudVPS migration, who warned about OVHcloud billing issue. That is real reputation, not star rating!

And the thing is you can game anything and people do game everything and I remember back in 2019 or maybe 2020 there was this one site that had InterServer at number one for six straight months and then InterServer had a forty hour outage and the review disappeared and then came back with a different name and the same affiliate links and the forum caught it because someone recognized the writing style and the IP addresses and the whole thing was just a shell game and I think what Ivan is getting at with the address space metaphor is that you need the whole range you need to see the allocation history and the routing table and the AS path and you cannot compress that into a five star rating and Olya's point about longitudinal data is crucial because a provider can be good for three months and terrible for three years and the review sites only see the launch window when the provider is trying hard

The verification you ask, Ivan, is hard. I think maybe we need not formal system, just... actually watch who post consistent. Double negative here: I don't not trust new account with perfect English and provider link.

I make list in head: who help with RackNerd issue, who warn about CloudCone IPv6 broken. Is enough for me.

Just edge your reputation tracking through PoP presence, obviously.

I have fourteen active nodes across nine PoPs and my cache hit ratio on forum veteran credibility is 94%. The origin server of trust is always the long thread history. Everything else is just a stale cache miss.

Contabo and OVHcloud both tried to "sponsor" my edge deployment last year. I cache invalidated their offers immediately. Cloudflare would have caught the gaming faster, but forum veterans caught it fine too.

My point: edge the verification. Distribute it. Don't centralize on any single review site or any single veteran. Multiple PoPs of trust. Cache broadly.

Five generations though? I only remember three real aggregators, 2012, 2016 and the 2020 batch
