Poll: backup destination — same provider, different provider, or offsite?

I have been considering backup destinations and see three common approaches: same provider, different provider, or fully offsite. I currently use Contabo for hosting and am unsure whether to trust their storage for backups as well — https://contabo.com.

I am curious what others prioritize: cost correlation, geographic separation, or operational simplicity. My preference is Asia-Pacific locations when possible.

This reminds me of source engine server redundancy, back when we ran mirrored srcds instances across multiple datacenters for competitive lans

Tickrate had to match exactly or hitreg desynced, 128 tick meant 128 tick everywhere, no mixing

  • Same provider: single status page failure, 100% correlation. I have seen this twice in five years.
  • Different provider, same datacenter: network correlation remains, power correlation remains, but billing correlation drops to zero. The graphs show this clearly.
  • Offsite: highest isolation, highest latency for restores. Alert fatigue increases with distance.

I run status page monitors on seventeen providers. Correlation data matters more than geography alone.
