Now I'm scared. 'Sara's Crafts' can't afford to lose six months of hosting money and have to migrate in a panic. What do people actually do here. Is monthly the only safe option. My customers need reliability.

The yearly discount is a customer acquisition cost dressed as savings. For what it's worth, the real protection is operational, not financial.
SPF/DKIM/DMARC parallel: you don't trust one mail server, you architect for failover. Same mindset. Separate registrar from hosting. Separate DNS from both. Automate backups to destination you control. The yearly/monthly question becomes irrelevant when you can repoint DNS in five minutes.
Correcting a misconception: insurance products for hosting exist in enterprise spaces. Consumer/hosting market gap is real. Someone should build it.
