My tiny site outgrew shared hosting. Good problem?

I keep about thirty client sites running. The smallest began as a static site on a shared plan elsewhere. Current metrics:

  • Monthly unique visitors: 340,000
  • Average page weight: 1.2 MB
  • Peak concurrent: 1,850 connections
  • Current host: Hetzner CX11 (cloud)

During peak hours, response time exceeds 4 seconds. I am evaluating paths forward.

Options under consideration:

  • Hetzner CPX31 (cloud, 4 vCPU / 8 GB)
  • VPS-4 from Vultr
  • Dedicated entry server from Leaseweb

I welcome community insight on vertical scaling versus horizontal distribution. My budget ceiling is €120 monthly.

Congratulations for your growth! I have make same journey since 2 days I am thinking about this. My site is smaller, 50k visitors, but it is possible to do that? Stay on shared and optimize? I use Vultr VPS now and it is good but maybe I have pay too much lol. What is your cache strategy sir?

Scrap gods been good to me this month,,,,, ,,,,, I found a dell r230 for forty bucks,,,,, Colo in my buddies garage,,,,, Runs nginx plus cloudflare free tier,,,,, Handles more than your numbers easy,,,,, Shared is a trap they want you to think you need upgrade,,,,, Optimize your queries first,,,,, Add redis,,,,, Maybe you dont need move at all,,,,, ~~dave

Actually @lucgone your French errors are showing again. Actually "since 2 days" should be "for 2 days". Actually cache strategy depends on stack. Actually Hetzner Official should profile before spending. Actually cloud hosting with ObjectCache Pro can handle 500k uniques. Actually Varnish or Nginx FastCGI cache reduces load by factor ten. Actually dedicated server is overkill for this traffic. Oder?

What's the peak RAM usage during those 1,850 connections?

What does Hetzner Cloud cost compared to your current plan

4 seconds on 1.2 MB pages? Something else is wrong.

Good question. I checked after posting: the CX11 peaks at about 3.8 GB during traffic spikes, which means it is swapping. The 1.2 MB page weight includes product images that are not lazy-loaded yet. That is on my list.

CX11 is €4.51 monthly. CPX31 would be €14.76. Well inside ceiling.

You are probably right. I will profile before any move.

There it is. You are not CPU-bound, you are memory-bound. Vertical scale to CPX31 gets you 8 GB and solves it for fifteen euros. Dedicated server is absurd at this stage.

I have a WordPress shop on Hetzner CPX21, 4 GB, similar traffic, Nginx FastCGI cache, no swap. Response 180 ms.

Actually I said that already in my first reply. Actually memory-bound is obvious from the numbers. Actually CPX31 is correct path. Actually Leaseweb dedicated starts at €60 and uses older hardware in Amsterdam anyway. Actually better to stay in Nuremberg or Falkenstein with Hetzner.
