47 days, 17 emails, a banner, and a holiday. This is why I tell clients: premium service means I handle it, you don't think about it. If you want to self-manage, accept the risk. 99.99% uptime means nothing if your domain is in redemption.

I back up my DNS zone files every week but I never thought about what happens if the domain itself goes. Can you back up a domain? No. You can back up the records, not the name. I have 3 domains, all auto-renew, different registrars. Paranoia or wisdom?

This one was actually nice about it. "I was on holiday" not "your system is broken." We see both. The broken system people get the same answer but the tone of the ticket changes.

So .com is 30 days grace always?
Usually 30, sometimes the registrar gives a few extra as goodwill. But Verisign sets 30. Don't count on goodwill.
Have you tried restarting it?
