47 days, 17 emails, a banner, and a holiday. This is why I tell clients: premium service means I handle it, you don't think about it. If you want to self-manage, accept the risk. 99.99% uptime means nothing if your domain is in redemption.
I back up my DNS zone files every week but I never thought about what happens if the domain itself goes. Can you back up a domain? No. You can back up the records, not the name. I have 3 domains, all auto-renew, different registrars. Paranoia or wisdom?

I host for people at parties. They forget to renew. I get the call at 2am, Zagreb time, because their nephew's wedding site is down. Now I build renewal into my fee and handle it myself. Cost of doing business with party people.

In Vietnam the banking system makes auto-renew hard. Many cards don't work with international registrars, or the bank flags it fraud. I use Namecheap — https://www.namecheap.com — with account funds, top up once a year manually. Not ideal but it works.
So .com is 30 days grace always? Or sometimes more?

White label lesson: my client thinks I am the registrar. I am not. I am the middleman. Their domain expires, they blame me. Now every contract has a clause: domain is your responsibility, I will remind you, I will not pay your redemption fee.
