Brother, I see many confusion about the domain expiry. Is very simple but the registrars make complicated. I make this mini-guide from my experience with RackNerd and others. Day 0: expiry. Day 1-30: grace, renew normal price. Day 31-60: redemption, cost more. Day 61+: delete, backorder war. But is different for each TLD. The .is domains is very fast delete, the .com is slow. Correct me if wrong!
Mini-guide: What actually happens day-by-day when a domain expires.
My clients ask about this constantly. I always tell them: premium domains deserve premium attention. Set auto-renew, open a support ticket if confused. I don't handle the technical timeline myself, that's between my clients and their registrar. Premium service means not worrying about day counts.
For .org I have seen 40 days grace, not 30. I manage a few domains on Windows Server DNS and the registrar integration actually shows the exact registry dates. Might be worth checking if your provider exposes that data.
The ticket said: "my domain was stolen by your expiration policy." Customer had 47 days of grace, 17 autorenewal emails, and a banner in their control panel. They opened the ticket on day 61. "I was on holiday." We restored it anyway. The ticket said thank you. The ticket did not say "I will enable autorenew."
Is deletes faster than 61 days? I thought all icann was same
47 days and 17 emails, still "stolen". Customers, man.
ICANN only sets the floor for .com/.net/.org. Country codes do what they want. .uk is Nominet, .is is ISNIC, they have their own rulebooks. The 61 day thing is a rough guide at best.
.is deletes fast because ISNIC is not interested in your drama. 30 days and it's gone. I have one, I set calendar reminders. Auto-renew means giving them a card, I use a virtual one that expires. So calendar it is.
You are right, I check now and my .org shows 40. I update my mini-guide in my head. The registrars should show this in big letters but they hide in FAQ. Thank you wendy.
This. I had a .co.uk drop after 28 days grace, no redemption at all. Nominet does not play. Customer was furious, we had to buy it off the dropcatch service for 4x the price.
