Hi all, sorry for the silly question but I need to run a small windows server for a client app. My vps is 2GB ram at OVHcloud (https://www.ovhcloud.com/en/vps/). Do I really have to pay full retail for server 2022? I see those $15 keys on random sites but that feels sketchy. Dont want to break anything or get my box suspended
What do you small guys actually do? Thanks

There are above-board paths. If this is truly small scale, the 180-day evaluation of Windows Server 2022 is fully functional and renewable twice. That gives you 540 days to decide if the workload justifies proper licensing. Many people panic-buy keys they don't need. For actual purchase, look at OEM System Builder licenses through proper distributors. They attach to the hardware, which in a VPS context means your provider's SPLA agreement covers you. Have you asked OVHcloud if they offer Windows as a monthly add-on?
Have you tried restarting it?

What cpu gen is that vps on? OVHcloud was running E5-2680v4 last I checked, about 120W TDP. If youre doing windows you want at least that generation for the AES-NI, makes a difference on remote desktop encryption.
I shipped a pallet of Dell R640s last month, dual silvers, and the SPLA licensing from the datacenter was $8/month per box. Thats the thing people miss, its not per socket anymore its per core reported. My boxes are 20C40T so the math gets ugly if you dont have a host who bundles it smart.
For a 2GB vps youre probably on a sliced thread anyway. Ask them what generation and if theyre doing core parking. Windows idles heavier than linux, maybe 400MB baseline vs 80MB on a debian minimal.

Ok so I run 52 boxes and heres the deal
Windows licensing math that actually matters:
- Linux vps average: $3.50/GB RAM
- Windows vps with SPLA: $6/GB RAM
- Those sketch keys: $0 but ive had 3 revoked in 6 months 😂
My breakdown:
- Contabo: €7/mo add-on, Server 2019
- Vultr: $5/mo, 2016 only (old template lol)
- Hetzner: €12/mo, 2022, overpriced
- OVHcloud: €6/mo, 2019 or 2022
Honestly just pay the provider. One client invoice covers it and you sleep fine. I tried the key roulette for a plex box once, key died mid-transcode, wife was mad, never again

The ticket said "our windows server is displaying activation required watermark during client demo"
Turns out they bought a $12 "pro" key off some forum and slapped it on Server 2019 Datacenter. The key was for windows 10 pro oem, wrong skew entirely, and they'd been running production sql on it for 8 months. We had to flag the account because microsoft audit trail on that key pointed to a bankrupt pc shop in ohio.
Another one: "why is my rdp blackscreening" — key was fine, but it was a mak key with 0 remaining activations. Guy bought it off a discord with "lifetime guarantee." guarantee lasted 11 days.
Just pay the six bucks

Here is our side.
SPLA at OVHcloud:
- Windows Server 2019/2022 Standard: €5.50/month
- Datacenter: €18/month (only useful if you need unlimited VMs, you do not)
- Charged prorata, no upfront commitment
- Template includes current patches, RDP enabled, Defender baseline
Specs on the 2GB plan you are on:
- KVM, 1 vCPU (Ryzen 9 5950X or 7950X depending on node)
- NVMe, typically 900-1400 MB/s
- Network: 500 Mbit shared, 100 Mbit guaranteed
As said, we eat the core count complexity. You report nothing to Microsoft, we do. If you bring your own license, we do not support activation failures and you lose our snapshot integration.
Key resellers: 95% are laundering stolen MSDN or Visual Studio subscriptions. We terminate for pirated licensing if audit flags it. Not worth the €5.50.

540 days sounds nice but rearm twice then what? Stuck
Then you migrate or you pay. The evaluation is a bridge, not a destination. I've used it twice for proof-of-concept work where the client needed six months to secure budget. Both times we moved to SPLA licensing after sign-off. It is not a production strategy.
Do I need to install the license myself?
OVHcloud's template is pre-activated if you select Windows at provisioning. You tick a box, they handle the rest. SPLA stands for Services Provider License Agreement. Microsoft page is confusing because they want you to call a partner, not self-serve.
