Has anyone compared Contabo's new AMD Ryzen VPS line to the old Intel ones? I am curious if the price jump is worth it for actual workload differences.

I have one of each in Nuremberg. The Ryzen 9 5900X VPS compiles Node projects about 2.3x faster. For serving static content, no difference. Depends on your workload.

Contabo charges roughly 40% more for Ryzen. If you are CPU-bound it pays for itself in saved time. If you are I/O or network bound, you are lighting money on fire.
I was productive before everyone needed the latest silicon to run a blog. My container on a 2014 Xeon works fine. The obsession with CPU generations is Kubernetes trauma.

I learning server very much. This thread help me understand VPS is not same as physical CPU. Thank you all.
I run Gentoo on a Hetzner auction E5-2670 v3. Compile times are long but the machine is cheap and I am patient. For production I would want newer. For hobby, who cares.

My 7 VPS are split between Contabo and Hetzner. The Contabo ones are older hardware but cost less than one night of energy drinks. I use them for Discord bots that barely tickle the CPU.

In Argentina the import taxes on new hardware make older generations economically viable much longer. Contabo's pricing lets me serve local clients without passing on crazy infrastructure costs. EOL Intel is still better than what I could buy domestically.
Night shift sysadmin here. I just migrated 20 VMs off E5 v4 nodes in Tallinn. The maintenance windows were the real cost, not the hardware. Providers dread fleet refreshes more than silicon failure.

I made a spreadsheet. Contabo E5 v4 vs Ryzen vs Hetzner AX42. Break-even for compile workloads is 14 months. For web hosting, never. I love spreadsheets.
