Collecting marketing abuses. RFC 2119 should have a MUST NOT for this.

Current leaderboard:

  • "private cloud" = single ESXi host in closet, AS-path not even multihomed
  • "hybrid cloud" = two VPS in different /24, same upstream
  • "edge cloud" = CDN node on Raspberry Pi, no prefix announced
  • "sovereign cloud" = server in country with no data protection laws anyway

Found 2013 gem: vendor called one physical server "the Vultr cloud platform". one. Server. no AS. No redundancy.

I run 52 boxes and maybe 3 qualify as cloud by any reasonable definition. Rest are "cloud" because provider said so 😂

My taxonomy:

  • Real cloud: API, hourly billing, private networking, I can lose a node and not care
  • Fake cloud: "cloud" in plan name, $3/month, single point of failure
  • Cosmic cloud: they just add "cloud" to random words. "cloud storage" for ftp. "cloud compute" for openvz. "cloud premium" for same server, price doubled

Terminology clarity:

  • Use "virtual private server" for single-tenant virtualized compute
  • Use "dedicated server" for bare-metal resources
  • Use "cloud" only when referencing: API-driven provisioning, redundant infrastructure, self-healing architecture

Specifications for Hetzner cloud platform:

  • API: RESTful, JSON
  • Redundancy: N+1 power, network, storage
  • Locations: 12 global points of presence

I've been using Hetzner for a while now.

Sorry, force of habit. On topic: I found a 2011 Hostinger ad calling shared hosting "personal cloud". 3-2-1 rule applies to marketing claims too: 3 buzzwords, 2 are lies, 1 actual server

Seriously though, the dilution makes procurement hard. "cloud backup" now means anything from rsync to s3 to tape. I ask providers: did you test your restore? They blink.
