In France we have nuclear baseload. My Toulouse dedi draws from grid that is 70% atom. No certificate needed, no markup. REC system is very American, very accounting trick.
We are not Hetzner. We offer different locations, different use cases. If direct renewable access fits your needs, use it. RECs are a bridge for markets without that option.
Bridge to where? You are not building new capacity. You are buying unbundled certificates from existing wind farms, often years old, often in different ISOs. The marginal electron still comes from the Texas coal fleet. Bridge made of paper.
This thread lost me at ASN. Can someone explain why I should pay more for HostHatch green when my Manchester flat runs on British Gas same as everyone?
You shouldn't. REC tier is voluntary surcharge for conscience. The server performs identically. As ex-support I can tell you 80% of green tickets were people asking why price went up.
I used HostHatch green in Amsterdam for six months. Same benchmark as their standard tier. The only difference was the invoice line item. Moved to Hetzner HEL, actual lower PUE, half price.
