Contabo $18 became $89 with zero warning

No downgrade path at all, just "current pricing"

So the $89 is US-specific. That's even worse, they baited with global pricing then added location fees later? I don't remember a location fee in 2023.

Jerrygone, checking my old invoices now.

It was there, just smaller. €1/mo maybe? Now it's €3-4 for US DCs. They bumped it quietly same time as base price. Death by a thousand cuts, except one cut is 394%.

Olespete. Trust No One. I pulled my Contabo backups the day they announced "improved network" last year. Improved network always means improved pricing coming.

Running two $15/yr RackNerd boxes in different DCs, rsync between them. If one dies or price-jumps, I have 24h to migrate DNS. Paranoia is a feature.

Joe27. What happened to Hetzner? Nobody mentions them. CX11 is €4.51/mo, more than old Contabo but less than new, and their network is actual premium.

Hetzner

Hetzner doesn't have US East DC. Finn here in Stockholm, Hetzner is 18ms to Falkenstein, obvious choice. But svendeal in Miami wants US presence, Hetzner only has Ashburn and it's cloud-only pricing, not the old bare-metal cheapness.

Different use case. Contabo won on "cheap in many places." Now they don't.

1ms or I don't want it

March_fyre. I got the same $89 invoice, opened ticket, got the same copy-paste. Asked for prorated refund to leave early, they said no. Standard German host inflexibility.

Charged back via PayPal. Contabo suspended the account within 2 hours, obviously. But I had migrated already. Nuclear option, use only if you're already out.

Fallenpure, Denver. Did anyone try negotiating? Like "match HostHatch or I walk"? Or are they too big to care now?

My experience with budget hosts: under 50 employees, sometimes yes. Contabo feels too big, too automated. The ticket response time was 36 hours, that's "we have 100k customers" scale.

I tried. Escalated ticket, asked for loyalty pricing, anything. Got "we understand your frustration" followed by same copy-paste. They're not negotiating.

Final spreadsheet for anyone following:

  • Contabo 2GB: $89/yr, no
  • RackNerd 2GB: ~$20/yr if you hunt deals
  • HostHatch 2GB: ~$36/yr on sale
  • OVHcloud Starter: €42/yr, 1GB only
  • Vultr 2GB: $72/yr, premium network
  • InterServer 2GB: $60/yr, price lock guarantee

InterServer's "price lock" is the real differentiator here. They actually mean it.

Noob14. Wait so InterServer won't raise prices later? Even after 5 years?

Sorry if this was covered, thread got long.
