Guys GUYS I need to vent. 2023 I SNAPPED IT UP at Contabo, €18/year for 2GB KVM. Tracked it in my spreadsheet, best deal of that quarter

Renewal invoice just hit: $89. EIGHTY NINE. No email, no banner in panel, NOTHING. I open ticket they say "current pricing" like thats an explanation

Before/after:

  • 2023: $18/yr, 2GB RAM, 1 core, 20GB SSD
  • 2025: $89/yr, SAME SPECS
  • Increase: 394%!!!

I asked for downgrade option, they say this IS the lowest plan now. What even. Anyone else get blindsided? I need exit strategy fast, migration pain incoming

world record: 4min Arch install

Hej, same on server at Contabo, my malý server too!!! I look into TOS now, maybe they hide something into config

No, this not right, $18 to $89 is big jump. I check my email, no warning too. Very bad

You find new host already? I think maybe OVHcloud or HostHatch have similar price

Contabo route via Cogent adds 34ms to my target anyway. Good excuse to migrate.

traceroute to contabo.com (203.0.113.45)
 1 192.168.1.1 0.5ms
 2 isp-gw 2.1ms
 3 cogent-peer 12.3ms
 4 * * *
 5 Contabo-edge 47.2ms

InterServer route via Telia: 18ms. RackNerd direct peer: 14ms.

Numbers don't lie. $89 buys better latency elsewhere.

I just got my first one at Vultr last month and now im worried. Do they all do this?

Also what is KVM, is that different from openvz? Sorry if dumb question

Same happened to me at Contabo, no warning at all

grabs popcorn, checks /r/drama

Did they really say that's the only plan? No downgrade path at all?

No downgrade path at all, just "current pricing"

Good catch. Mine says $89 because they billed me in USD from St. Louis DC. €4.99 * 1.08 * 12 = $64.70, but they hit me with $7.40/mo "location fee" for US datacenter. Adds up to $88.80. So technically not the base plan, just the only plan with US location surcharge.

Still robbery. Miami latency to Nuremberg is 110ms though, so I paid the tax.

Then don't route to Nuremberg. I run Singapore DC for Contabo and latency to my Mumbai target is 62ms. The St. Louis DC is fine for US East, your 110ms sounds like bad peering from your ISP, not Contabo's fault.

$89 is still absurd for 2GB. Just saying the latency complaint is fixable.

Stockholm to Nuremberg is 34ms via Cogent. Same problem as my traceroute showed. Contabo's upstream mix is budget-tier, that's not ISP-dependent when it shows up hop by hop.

I moved my monitoring node to HostHatch Stockholm, 12ms direct. €36/yr for 2GB during their last sale. Not $18 cheap, but not $89 stupid either.
