6 months running a Tor exit on Contabo: 47 abuse emails, FBI inquiry

So you're EU-hosted with a US legal presence? That sounds like the worst of both worlds for paperwork. My rack is in Madrid, all Spanish-registered, and I still get German abuse complaints forwarded because of IP geolocation. The automated systems don't care where your LLC is.

No no, I'm US-based, US LLC, just the VPS is in Nuremberg. Contabo bills me in EUR, I eat the conversion fee. The FBI thing was purely because the traffic exited through my node and someone in the US used it. German police never contacted me. It's jurisdictional spaghetti and nobody knows who has standing.

Monthly throughput is around 40-50 TB. The 4.99 plan handles it because Tor isn't constant load, it's bursty. CPU sits at 60% average, spikes to 90% during US evening hours.

Porto here. 40-50 TB on a 5 euro plan is insane value even with the abuse headache. I'm paying OVH 15 EUR for half that traffic on a Kimsufi. Contabo's network quality at that price point surprises me, I assumed they'd throttle hard.

This. I run a small exit in Prague on a local provider, 15 EUR/month, 1 Gbps symmetric. I get maybe 2 abuse emails a month because Czech cops don't care and the provider knows what Tor is. The US obsession with exit nodes is pathological.

Toronto perspective: if you're running this as an individual, check if your home province requires disclosure for "telecommunications common carrier" activity. Ontario doesn't, but BC does for anything that looks like public network infrastructure. I looked into it for a side project and the provincial regulator's definition is broader than you'd think.

Also Doug, did you declare the VPS on your US taxes? Foreign financial account, even 5 EUR/month? Asking for a friend who definitely did not forget to do this.

Curitiba here. We don't have this problem because affordable VPS with unlimited traffic basically doesn't exist in Brazil. You gringos complain about abuse emails, I complain about paying 150 reais for 500 GB transfer. Different problems.
