1000 days uptime on my oldest cheap VPS

So I was cleaning out my email and found the original welcome letter from my very first vps its been running since march 2022 and I just checked and its at 1000 days uptime exactly I couldnt believe it so I took a screenshot and here it is

  • 1024mb ram
  • Single core shared
  • 20gb ssd

And its still serving my static site like a champ I pay three dollars a month and I dont even remember what provider it was under anymore oh wait the invoice says RackNerd but when I went to their site to see if they still offer it the domain is just parked now so I guess im grandfathered into a ghost company lol anyone else still riding ancient cheap boxes into the sunset

Lol thats wild ngl my oldest box is like 400 days and I thought that was impressive RackNerd going poof is classic lowend story though at least your inference workloads arent hitting that thing right one core would cry

OpenVZ or KVM? At 1000 days I am guessing OpenVZ 6 with a frozen kernel. The virtualization tax on those old containers is negligible but the security surface is grim. No live migration possible if the node fails. Still, impressive hardware endurance from whatever node you landed on.

1000 days says more about the node than the provider

  • Dual e5-2670 probably
  • Consumer ssds in raid 10 if lucky
  • Supermicro board bought at auction 2019

My oldest auction box hit 800 days before a psu killed it

The provider vanishing while the service persists is the true lowend hosting experience. We do not pay for the company. We pay for the electrons and the hope. Someday all panels will redirect to parking pages and we will still have our cron jobs; -- Marcus

You got it. OpenVZ 6 with a 2.6.32 kernel that hasnt seen a patch since before my nephew was born. I know I should migrate but the site is just static html and the domain is cheap too so honestly if it gets popped ill just spin something else up. The uptime is more of a party trick than a bragging point.

This is why I screenshot my control panel URLs. RackNerd sold some brands/assets around 2023 but the actual nodes kept billing through a residual processor. Check your card statement carefully, sometimes the descriptor changes to a shell name. I had a $9/yr plan from 2019 that billed through three different merchant names before finally dying.

Confirmed grim. That kernel has known container escapes patched in mainline years ago. The node is probably running an ancient SolusVM or Virtualizor install that nobody has root on anymore, which paradoxically means nobody can patch it either. Hardware endurance yes, security posture absolutely not.

If you can get a console snapshot, check if /proc/user_beancounters still exists. That will tell us if its true OpenVZ or a weird Virtuozzo hybrid.

This is the way for static sites honestly. I run my blog on a $4/mo Hetzner CX11 and keep a terraform file ready. 15 minutes to rebuild anywhere. Uptime worship is for people who have never had to explain to a client why their ecommerce cart was down for six hours because the host "was performing emergency maintenance."

I have stripped enough of these to know. The E5-2670 v1 was the king of cheap dedis circa 2019. 16c32t, C2 stepping, AVX but no AVX2. Still floating around Hetzner auction for 30 EUR. The RAM is usually Samsung ECC that outlives everything else. The PSUs are where they cheap out, always.
