Registry price caps changing next year. ICANN contracts up for renewal on three legacy gTLDs, caps lifting January 2027. To be honest, this is bigger than most domain investors realize.
Numbers:
- Current cap: 10% annual increase
- Proposed: none for .site, .online, .xyz variants
- 6-month notice required for hikes
My read: bulk transfer window is Q4 2026. As said, I am moving ~400 domains before December. Costs me €0.18 per transfer now versus potentially €8-12 renewals in 2028 if registries max out pricing.
Predicting .site goes 400% within 18 months. They have debt to service from acquisition.
