1GB 'budget' now costs what 4GB did in 2019: are we the suckers?

Tracked my invoices. 2019: CloudCone https://cloudcone.com 4GB KVM at $6/mo. 2024: same tier, $14. 2026: "budget" 1GB at $7, "standard" 2GB at $16.

The ticket said: "Due to increased operational costs we have adjusted pricing to reflect market realities." The ticket from a different provider said: "Your plan is grandfathered, please enjoy." Then they got bought out and the ticket said: "Legacy plans are being migrated to current rate cards."

Found my old spreadsheets. DRAM spot prices, DDR4 specifically, up 340% since 2019. Everyone blames crypto, AI training, phones. I blame us for not hoarding 2019 contracts like dragon gold.

Anyone still sitting on actual grandfathered deals?

- 2019: 4GB DDR4 ECC, ~$4/mo at scale
- 2024: same stick, ~$11/mo equivalent
- 2026: DDR5 shortage plus DDR4 EOL, manufacturers charging premium for "legacy"

As said, providers pass through 60-70% of RAM cost. The rest is power, space, port.

My current stack at OVHcloud:
- 2x EPYC 9654
- 512GB DDR5 per node
- Break-even at $22/GB/month retail

Your 2019 prices were subsidized by oversupply. Not coming back.

I have grandfathered plan in KnownHost, 8GB szerwer for $8. They forget about me, no? I backup to home NAS every week, fearing email "dear customer, migration".

Szerwer is old but working. No complaints.

I found in old email the plan grandfathered, 8GB the memory with traffic unmetered. Paying $5 still, but the company dead. The server works, ¿vos understand?

The invoice comes from "RackNerd Billing" now. ¡The support nonexistent! But the server lives.

"grandfathered" is just deferred churn.

For what it's worth, I've seen three providers "honor" legacy plans by silently degrading network priority, moving nodes to oversold clusters, or—my favorite—requiring annual payment with 30-day renewal windows sent to spam folders.

SPF won't save you here. Check your PTR records while you're at it; half these zombie hosts have IP space that landed on SORBS because nobody monitors abuse@.

The 8GB for $5 is real until the upstream gets reclaimed. Then you're explaining to clients why mail.example.com has no A record.
