I was trying to reach my VPS in their singapore location and couldnt ping anything. I checked after and their status page never changed. Is this normal? Sorry if this is a dumb question
Your status page is always green
Status pages are pipelines | cat marketing | grep lies | sort -u | wc -l | the output is always green | their "degraded" threshold is 50% packet loss | you had 49% | grep insight | sed 's/green/red/' | they wont
The "degraded" threshold game is common. OpenVZ providers used to hide node issues by defining "down" as 100% packet loss for 30+ minutes, knowing most users would retry and blame their own routing before that threshold triggered. Real virtualization—KVM, proper cgroup limits—doesn't prevent status page dishonesty but at least you can verify independently. Virtualization tax includes the cognitive load of not trusting your provider's own metrics.
Status pages are /dev/null for accountability | your complaint was redirected | their response piped to marketing | EOF
| build your own monitor
| external checks every 60s
| publish results publicly
| they cannot ignore what others see
I built my own monitor 😊 uptime-kuma on a 5€ CloudCone vps checks KnownHost every 30s publishes to status page I control now when they lie my page tells truth their support asked me to stop I said no
Same. Status page stayed green through three hours of 80% loss.
I run KVM on a bare metal box in Osaka. When my provider's status page says green and I cannot reach, I check from Tokyo and Singapore nodes I rent cheap. Two of three agree, it is them. One of three, it is KDDI or NTT being KDDI or NTT. Regional routing here is its own game.
This is the real problem. Status pages measure from their own edge, often from the same AS, sometimes the same building. A true external check would be from a different network, different IX, different eyeball ISP. But that costs money and generates tickets. Easier to define "up" as "our border router responds to ICMP" and call it a day.
I have seen providers in Ashburn where "global outage" meant their Looking Glass was reachable. The actual customer prefixes were blackholed. Green page.
Nate_pad which provider was this? I am in London and had similar with a Singapore VPS last month. Their status page stayed green for six hours while traceroute died inside Telstra's network. Not even their fault at the VPS level but they never acknowledged it.
It was UpCloud. I did not want to name names because I was not sure if I was being dumb. Their Singapore page stayed green the whole time. I am on BT Fibre here in Leeds.
