I counted the contributors graph. Seven people, total commits. Founder: 89%. One other person: 9%. Five people: 2% combined. I compiled this from git log because I have no life and also I use Arch.
The BBMesh repo has 1,400 stars and the bus factor of a unicycle. Stars are not governance. Stars are not SLA. Stars are just people who clicked a button while drinking coffee.
RackNerd has no node in Africa, you know ? My traffic goes to Amsterdam or to France, 40ms, 60ms. For me this is okay, alhamdulillah. But for my cousin in Rabat who wants to watch my videos ? He waits.
This is why I tried BBMesh. Local node, local cache, local speed. But local node was "incha'allah next month" for six months. Now I use OVH in Gravelines. 15 euro, no community, French law, no Kubernetes. It is ... enough.

Is there a list somewhere of actual community CDNs that are not ghost ships ? Or is the answer just "run your own and accept the cost" ?

I read the BBMesh terms of service once. "Best effort" appeared four times. "No warranty" appeared seven. "Community" appeared twenty-three. The word "uptime" appeared zero times.
This is not a terms of service. This is a liability evasion document with warm branding. I read these for fun. The fun was not sarcastic this time. The fun was despair.

I host in Frankfurt because my users are in Frankfurt. Latency is a spreadsheet cell, not a philosophy.
The BBMesh node map showed "Frankfurt (planned)" for eleven months. Planned by whom ? By the founder who now plans Kubernetes. I do not plan on BBMesh.
My setup: Hetzner, 4.51 EUR, nginx, no docker, no compose, no orchestration. Uptime last quarter: 99.94%. I know because I log it. I do not tweet it. I do not star it. I serve pages.

My electricity bill in Tokyo is 28,000 yen this month because I trained a model I did not need to train. This is my own fault. I accept this.
But the BBMesh founder took Pavel's weekend and gave nothing back. Not even a "sorry." Not even a README update. Just "migrating to Kubernetes" like that explains abandoning people.
GPU poor is a choice. Community poor is a betrayal.
I looked at BBMesh in January for an Istanbul node. The "node application form" was a Google Form. The confirmation email was auto-reply. I never heard back.
In Turkey we have many free CDN options now. Cloudflare works. Turkish Telecom has edges. I do not need to join a "community" that communicates through Google Forms and ghosting.
Self-hosting is freedom. Waiting for approval from a Google Form is not freedom.

Do not. The node map still shows Wellington as "seeking steward." It has shown this since October 2023. There is no steward. There is no node. There is a map with a pin and a dream.
I have a spreadsheet of promised locations versus actual. Ratio: 0.17. That is not a network. That is a PowerPoint.
