Windows VPS for Steam game server: my failed experiment

I attempted to deploy a Counter-Strike 1.6 dedicated server on Windows Server 2022 Datacenter (build 20348.2402) via RackNerd. The process consumed 48 hours and produced zero working results.

Issues encountered:

  • SteamCMD for Windows lacks headless stability; required GUI session to persist
  • Audio subsystem dependencies triggered watchdog resets every 4 hours
  • Windows Defender flagged hlds.exe as Trojan:Win32/Zpevdo.B on 3 separate binaries
  • NIC driver (virtio-win-0.1.229) dropped packets under UDP burst loads

Switched to Debian 12.5. Server operational in 17 minutes. Tickrate stable at 100.

Recommendation: Use Linux for dedicated game servers. Windows adds no value here.

It's always DNS. Always.

Do you need windows for the game itself? I thought steam only runs on windows 😬 my nephew wants a server and I was going to get him one

Steamcmd runs on linux; since 2013; your nephew will be fine; went down again; ticket open; no response

Did you test your restore before this experiment? 😊

3-2-1 checklist for your next try:

  • 3 copies of server config
  • 2 different media (local + cloud)
  • 1 offsite

Debian was the right call. Kids these days want instant setup. Your 17 minutes beats 48 hours.

Test your restore. Always.

3-2-1 or you're already dead

Source engine runs native on linux since 2013, tickrate is server-side anyway

Kids play valorant now, no dedicated servers, riot runs everything, communities die when companies kill the binaries

Back in 2009 I ran 33-tick css on a pentium 4 with 512mb ram, windows xp, no issues, now you need 16gb and a nvme for the same experience

They don't make them like that anymore
