So I was browsing the OVHcloud templates (actually their old panel, not the new one (which still has it too (weird))) and saw CentOS 7 listed. Back in my day (2019) this was normal but it's EOL since June 2024. actually libvirt-6.0.0 was the last thing I ran on it. So why do hosts still offer this? Is it customer demand? Licensing costs for Alma/Rocky? Or just inertia? I found a Hetzner template too -- https://www.hetzner.com/cloud. Seems like bad security practice actually. Someone explain.
We see this question come up a lot. A few providers have chimed in privately: customer demand is real, especially for legacy compliance environments. Some would rather pay for extended lifecycle support than migrate. Not ideal, but not always lazy.
I'll keep an eye on this thread if it gets heated.
