What do you actually spend monthly on VPS (total across all providers) versus what you tell people (spouse, coworkers, that one friend who "doesn't get it")? Anonymous obviously (or "anonymous" (this forum logs everything (I checked (the privacy policy is a fiction)))).

Options:
- Under $20 (liar or actually disciplined)
- $20-50 (respectable)
- $50-100 (getting warm)
- $100-200 (homelab "investment")
- $200+ (please share your story (I need to feel better (or worse (surprise me))))

I admit: I say $40. Reality is $127. Four providers. Two idle. One "staging" that's just a prettier production. You?

Actual: $89/mo
- RackNerd: €12 (2 vCPU / 2GB / 40GB) — DNS, mail
- OVHcloud: €45 (4 vCPU / 8GB / 160GB) — main workloads
- KnownHost: €18 (1 vCPU / 1GB / 20GB) — monitoring, offsite
- GreenCloudVPS: $14 (2 vCPU / 4GB / 80GB) — experiments, usually idle

As said, I tell my partner €50. She does not need to know about idle experiments.

$340/month. Two scrubbing layers, anycast from three PoPs. Not a homelab. Actual production need. 340Gbps filtered last Tuesday. Vultr + Leaseweb combo.

Tell people: "around 300." Not hiding, just rounding.

$8 lor. One Vultr tiny plan. Can already. Tell people $8 also. No shame. Why need so many VPS leh. My friend spend $200 every month, house full of server, wife angry already. Not me lah.

Dear/madam, my spend is $55 only, and I inform the same to others also. It is not a matter for hiding itself. Kindly note that I use Hetzner for primary hosting and Time4VPS for secondary DNS. Both are cheap only. I do not understand why one would misrepresent this figure.

I Voted $200 plus and here is the full story I guess because nobody ever reads my posts anyway I spend $400 a month on what I call my "homelab" but it is really just hoarding I have seven VPS across four providers and I use maybe two of them the rest are running plex with no users and a minecraft server for my nephew who stopped playing in 2024 and I still pay for it and when the server went down last tuesday I was eating cereal for breakfast cheerios with almond milk and my cat Mr whiskers sat on the keyboard and the weather was rainy and I thought "this is it I will finally cancel" but then I didn't and here we are and I am not even sure what half of them do anymore and my husband thinks it is $80 total because I show him only the invoices from the two I actually use and hide the rest in a spreadsheet labeled "utilities" and I know this is a problem but every time I try to cancel one I think "but what if I need it" and I never do and I am yelling into the void here because no one reads these anyway

Genuine question — at that volume are you still saving versus Vultr's flat-rate tier or did you cross the breakpoint where per-gig makes sense? I never know where the line is

My own: €34 real, told the room €20 because "the backup box barely counts"

I finally did the math properly: $127 actual, told my partner $80. The gap is mostly a HostHatch box I keep "just in case" and a CloudCone storage instance that's 90% empty
