From Munich: Hetzner? No DDoS protection on cloud, same problem. Their dedicated has basic filtering but €50+ minimum. Not budget.
What do you use for DDoS protection when your budget host offers none?
Your 'cloud' is just someone else's computer with marketing — and your DDoS protection is just someone else's bandwidth with marketing. 2Tbps sounds big until you realize most attacks are 10-50Gbps reflection. What matters is filtering quality, not number. OVHcloud 500Gbps with good UDP rules beats 2Tbps that drops legitimate game packets. I used https://www.ovhcloud.com/en/vps/ for that.
This. I had a "protected" host that filtered DDoS by dropping ALL UDP over 1Mbps. Great, my game server worked at 0.5Mbps. Useless.
Back to OP: Doug, you said $15/month RackNerd. What's your actual server specs? If it's just Minecraft for 200, you might fit on a $20 Vultr with vague protection. Or OVHcloud VPS €8 in Beauharnois if your players are US east. Move host = solve problem, maybe.
4GB RAM, 2 vCPU, 100GB SSD. It's tight for 200 but most aren't on at once, peak is like 60. Vultr $20 might work but that's $5 more and I'd need to migrate world data. OVHcloud Beauharnois — I'm in NJ, my players are US east coast mostly. Hmm. Is migration pain worth it?
