What do you use for DDoS protection when your budget host offers none?

TCPShield is real, been around years. Not hosting, just proxy. But

is correct, they only proxy 25565 and standard protocols. Your modpack with custom query port dies anyway.

I'm in Amsterdam, close to RackNerd's DC here. Ping is great but DDoS protection nonexistent. I moved my FiveM server to OVHcloud VPS in Limburg, €8/month, 500Gbps protection — https://www.ovhcloud.com/en/vps/. Game servers need UDP, OVHcloud actually handles UDP unlike some "DDoS protected" hosts that only filter TCP.

OVHcloud Limburg, that's interesting. I thought they only had Roubaix for EU west.

They opened Limburg recently, it's in the Netherlands. Roubaix still bigger but Limburg works fine for me. Latency to Amsterdam is 15ms.

From Munich, OVHcloud Gravelines or Limburg both fine. But

KnownHost $40 with 2Tbps protection

KnownHost Amsterdam works for me in Seoul? NO. My players are Korea, Japan, Taiwan. I tried. 300ms to Amsterdam. Dead game. That's why I said KnownHost, but I should say: my players are mostly US west and some EU. Geography matters. ALL CAPS: CHECK YOUR PLAYER BASE BEFORE BUYING.

In São Paulo, everything is far. Vultr has São Paulo DC, I use it. $20/month cloud with basic protection. Not 2Tbps but enough for my 30-person Valheim server. Better than GRE tunnel to EU with 200ms.

This thread drifted fast. OP asked about budget solutions when host has nothing. Answers so far: TCPShield (free, limited), GRE tunnel (techmei config, single point fail), change IP (works 80%), OVHcloud VPS (€8+, https://www.ovhcloud.com/en/vps/), KnownHost ($40), Vultr Spectrum ($200). Nobody has magic. Budget + DDoS = compromise.

Following.

Same here. My Rust server on RackNerd LA died twice. Changed IP, updated Steam server list, players found me again. Third time I just gave up, moved to Vultr Silicon Valley. $24/month, 2 vCPU 4GB, their "DDoS protection" is vague but hasn't died yet. 6 months clean.
