So my little game server on RackNerd got hit with 50Gbps last night they're a budget host, $15/month, you can guess how much ddos protection that buys hint: none server dead, ip nullrouted, my discord of 200 people angry I knew the risks but still : what do you all actually use when your host offers nothing? I can't afford Vultr Enterprise or whatever gre tunnel to some vps? Just change ip and pray? Let me hear the ghetto solutions, I'm not proud
What do you use for DDoS protection when your budget host offers none?
What's the game server actually pulling, RAM-wise my home box has 512GB ddr5 , epyc 9654, could absorb 50Gbps easy with proper filtering but you budget so you suffer gre tunnel to what, some 2GB OVHcloud vps https://www.ovhcloud.com/en/vps/ that dies faster than your dedi cloudflare spectrum works but $$$ honestly just buy more ip from RackNerd and change dns when hit not elegant but your wallet will thank impatient with budget because budget is wrong answer to ddos question get proper host or get hit, simple
The 50Gbps very big, my vps small, cannot absorb I will use Vultr Spectrum before, will work but expensive now I use GRE tunnel to HostHatch small box, 10Gbps protection only if attack bigger, I change ip, dns update fast the config:
ip tunnel add gre1 mode gre remote 203.0.113.1 local 198.51.100.1 ttl 255
ip addr add 10.255.255.2/30 dev gre1Not perfect but will work for small attack big attack: pray only XD my friend use GreenCloudVPS, they have basic protection, enough for game server maybe you switch host? Game server need protection, budget host no protection, problem
50Gbps? FIGHTING! But also GG no budget solution for this GRE tunnel = single point of fail Vultr Spectrum = $200/month minimum your $15 host vs $200 protection = no just change IP and hope kk I did this 3 years worked 80% 20% = server dead, community angry, I drink soju now I pay KnownHost $40 with 2Tbps protection sleep better ALL CAPS for emphasis: RACKNERD + DDOS = PAIN no periods just truth
RackNerd even sell extra ips? I never saw that option
What game is it? Some need UDP, some TCP.
It's a Minecraft server, UDP. And yeah RackNerd sells extra IPs, you have to open a ticket, $2/month each. I've got 3 now. The "change IP and pray" strategy is what I'm doing but man, 200 people refreshing DNS every time gets old fast.
Minecraft UDP, got it. You could try TCPShield, it's free tier covers up to like 50 players. Routes through their network, hides your real IP. Not perfect but better than naked RackNerd.
TCPShield good for Minecraft, I forget this yes, free tier exist but if you have modded server with custom port, problem TCPShield only 25565 my friend use it, works for vanilla modded = need other way
Wait, TCPShield isn't a company in the OP's list. Are they legit? I block anything not whitelisted.
