I went the other direction. Bought 5-year .com registration at current price before hike hits. Locked in $10.83 at Dynadot. Yes it is prepay risk but 5 years is shorter decade, and Dynadot has been around since 2002. Sleep okay.
So did RegisterFly. Longevity is not guarantee. But 5 years is reasonable middle ground. I did 2-year on my main .com, 1-year on experiments. Layered risk.
Did anyone actually read the Department of Commerce approval document? It is not 15% every year forever. It is 7% years one-two, then 6% years three-four, then 4% years five-six, then capped. Still bad but the headline "15% hike" is worst-case single year, not every year.
Capped at what? The document says "capped" but the base keeps growing. 7% of bigger number is still bigger. Over six years it compounds to roughly 40% total. I checked because you made me curious. Thanks for that, I think.
This is why I prepay where I can. Not decade, not 5-year, but 2-3 year where registrar allows. The time value of money versus hike risk. I ran spreadsheet, break-even is around 18 months at these hike rates. After that prepay wins.
