Same experience as bird761 with KnownHost. Support was good, hardware was not. They migrated me to "newer node" twice, still old Xeons. Finally refunded after I opened ticket with fio results showing 80 IOPS on their "SSD" storage.
Left for RackNerd, never looked back.
What about OVH? Their GAME servers have anti-DDoS, i7-7700K or better, SSD. 15 EUR range. Not as cheap as VPS but you get DDoS protection which matters if someone decides to boot your server.

Specs are fine but OVH's billing in EUR with VAT confusion for US customers. Also their SSD is often Samsung PM863a, SATA not NVMe. Fine for most games, Valheim's save pattern really wants NVMe.
Their DDoS protection is legit though. If you're running public server, worth considering.

Homelab gang checking in. Threadripper 1950X, 64GB, Samsung 970 EVO. Valheim for 12 friends, zero issues. Electricity bill in Phoenix summer is... significant. But I control everything.
VPS is smarter if you're not already running a lab. Don't buy hardware just for one game.
Following this thread. Currently on a "gaming host" paying 18 USD, lag during events. Going to try Hetzner based on recommendations here. Do I need to know Docker or can I run it bare metal?

Docker make easy sir but not required. Valheim dedicated server is just SteamCMD download. Systemd service to keep running. My friend run bare metal on Contabo, also work fine.
Docker just convenient for update and backup.

Bare metal is fine until it's 3 AM and the server crashes during a boss fight. Docker with --restart unless-stopped and a health check means you sleep through the night.
Also: bind mounts for world data, not volumes. Easier to back up, easier to migrate. Learned this the hard way.
This thread convinced me. Cancelled my 14 dollar gaming host. Signed up for RackNerd New York, 2.99 special. Will report back after weekend raid.
Those RackNerd specials are annual pay, just so you know. Fine if you're committed, but factor that in. I prefer monthly for testing.
Also check: some of their cheapest plans are in LA only. If your players are EU, ping matters.

I don't understand half of what's being discussed but I run a small bakery site on shared hosting. Should I be worried about SSD vs HDD for my WordPress? Or is this just for games?
