Valheim dedicated: why my $3 VPS outperforms 'gaming hosts'

If it says lxc or openvz, you're in a container

Tested this on three "dedicated" hosts before I gave up. Two were LXC. One wouldn't let me run systemd-detect-virt at all—permission denied. They had a custom kernel that hid everything.

The third was KVM but oversold 8:1 on a E5-2680v2. CPU steal time 40% during evening hours.

KnownHost was KVM at least, but those Xeons... E5-2630v2 I think. Single thread worse than my phone. Valheim is very single-thread hungry for world gen.

Switched to Hetzner CPX11, 2 cores AMD EPYC. Night and day. 5.50 EUR, Helsinki datacenter. Ping from Stockholm is 12ms.

If you're not tracking your config in Ansible or Salt, you're doing it twice. My Valheim setup is 40 lines of Ansible, deploys to any Debian box in 3 minutes. Backup to Hetzner Storage Box with rclone, 500GB for 5.20 EUR. Monitored with Uptime Kuma.

RackNerd is good for price but their Bangkok routing goes through Los Angeles. 180ms. Fine for Valheim actually, the netcode is forgiving, but don't host CS2 there.

I use RackNerd for personal stuff, local Thai host for game servers. 250 THB, NVMe, domestic routing.

Sir JokoNord thank you for sharing! I am from Bandung also. May I ask, you use Hetzner storage box for backup, how much you pay? I want setup similar for my Minecraft server.

Hello friend! I use Hetzner Storage Box 100GB, 3.25 EUR per month. Very cheap. rclone sync with cron, very simple.

My 8 friend very happy, no lag even when we sail long distance. Before on "gaming host" boat teleport back because desync. Very frustrating sir.

traffic worse than my packet loss

Routing matters more than people think. RackNerd Ashburn is fine for US East but their Amsterdam peer is Cogent-heavy. If your players are in EU, expect some interesting paths through Frankfurt.

For EU Valheim, Hetzner Falkenstein or Nuremberg is hard to beat. Their own backbone, no transit games.

iBGP, eBGP, don't care, just peer

I white-label these for clients. The margin on "gaming" packages is criminal. I buy Hetzner CPX21, 4 cores 8GB, 8.20 EUR. Resell as "premium gaming" for 35 EUR. Clients think it's a deal because "gaming hosts" charge 45 for worse hardware.

I sleep fine. I tell them the specs, they compare, they choose me. Not my fault the industry is broken.

THIS. This happen to me too cara. Every time we approach plains, boat jump back 100 meter. I think was my internet but now I know was host. HDD cannot keep up with world stream.

Already order RackNerd LA — https://www.racknerd.com. 3.29 dollar, 2GB but I will upgrade to 4GB if need.

Has anyone tried running Valheim on ARM? Oracle Cloud free tier, Ampere cores. I got it working with box64 but save load is 22 seconds. Not great. Stick to x86 for now.
