Went back and checked mine and OVHcloud counts ingress+egress combined, so every Vultr backup is double-dipped. That alone explains maybe 40% of my "missing" bandwidth

Still curious about the conduit vs synapse question though—anyone got real numbers on federation overhead? Not theoretical, like actual interface counters before/after

Switched to incremental + zstd, dropped from ~280GB nightly to under 4GB. OVHcloud's accounting counts ingress too so the full stream was double-billing me basically

I ask because I've been treating cold tiers as free-to-pull and now I'm worried.

I actually switched from Synapse to Conduit last year. The overhead difference is real but not magic—maybe 15-20% less background chatter, mostly from lighter state sync. Federation still hurts because *other servers* hammer you regardless of what you run. The real win for me was putting nginx cache in front of Matrix media for 48h. Stopped repeat downloads of the same memes from federated rooms.

Did anyone actually test the conduit vs synapse bandwidth claim? I migrated a small homeserver last year and federation traffic barely moved. The protocol overhead is the protocol overhead.

What *did* move the needle was dropping full-size originals in immich. Keep the raw in cold storage, let the mobile clients re-upload if they need it. Thumbnails and small derivatives only on the OVHcloud box.
