Three hosts, same datacenter, wildly different networks

I already buy three VPS from different provider, all say "Tier-1 network" and "premium routing" but same building in Amsterdam can or not? I test with iperf3 and ping to Jakarta. Result very different lah:

  • Contabo: 180ms, packet loss 2%, very bad peak hour
  • OVHcloud: 165ms, stable, but price double
  • RackNerd: 195ms, sometimes routing through London first, why dong

Same datacenter I check IP whois, same address. But network not same same. How they can sell like this? I confuse already.

This disparity is leveraged through our partner ecosystem's value-added redistribution of network capacity. Synergy between upstream commitments and client-facing SLAs creates differentiated performance tiers within shared physical infrastructure. The facility's synergy is leveraged by each value-added redistribution partner independently.

This is why I went ARM on OVHcloud! Ampere Altra, insane value, runs circles around the x86 competition! Their network actually delivers! But yeah I've seen this before - same building, totally different blend. One provider bought cheap transit, another peers properly. Specs matter but routing matters more! I used https://bgp.tools to check.

one small ping for man...

Contabo is single-homed to Cogent. RackNerd bought a cheap blended product with no SLA. Same rack hall, different contracts.

  • OVHcloud: 3x transit + peering = €4k/month commit
  • Budget tier: 1x transit, no peering = €800/month
  • Resold tier: someone else's commit, oversubscribed

Numbers dont lie. We publish ours.

Containers before it was cool

Get a dedicated server, run BIRD for BGP, announce your own space. Docker compose up a reverse proxy, pick your upstreams. I self-hosted my entire stack for three years, full table, no mystery transit. The knowledge is worth more than the convenience.

Routing is very hard I will check my provider contract more careful maybe I switch to OVHcloud or self host thank you sir

Same address doesn't mean same fiber blend. Who are the upstreams?

Same building different pipe, I see this all the time lah
