This is why I stopped chasing promo tiers. The time you spend monitoring and ticketing is worth more than the savings. I just use DigitalOcean's basic droplet and forget about it.
The $1/month host that wasn't terrible
Following.
Has anyone actually tried their Storage Box product? 1TB for 5 EUR seems decent for backups but I wonder about the throughput.
I use Storage Box for offsite backups. Throughput is fine for that use case, around 80 MB/s from my Falkenstein server. Not amazing but reliable.
I moved from Hetzner to Contabo to Hetzner again. The price is hard to beat for EU traffic. My Istanbul users see 65ms to Falkenstein, 110ms to Ashburn. Location matters more than price for latency.
Contabo's "unlimited traffic" is not unlimited in practice. They throttle after 100TB or so. Hetzner is more honest about limits.
Same here on the Storage Box. Use it with rclone crypt, works fine.
The netinstall ISO tip from olya is gold. Their default templates install some agent I do not trust. Debian minimal from ISO, then my own ansible.
Bangalore to Ashburn is 220ms. Not Hetzner's fault but makes the $1 tier useless for anything interactive here. I stick to Singapore DCs for APAC work.
São Paulo to anywhere in the US is 140-160ms. We are used to it. The price still wins for batch workloads.
