Just realized today is the anniversary bro — january 2016 I signed up for a $6/month 128MB OpenVZ at some provider thats been dead for like six years now still have the original welcome email and my first screenshot of top showing 128MB total with 4MB free. Ran irc bouncer and a wordpress that got zero visitors. Took me three days to compile nginx because I didnt know about -j4. The nostalgia actually hurts a little. Which providers take XMR now? Asking for a friend who wants to recreate the vibe without the credit card trail. Anyway heres to a decade of throwing money at tiny servers
Ten years since my first VPS
¡¿ten years?! Is very impressive my friend
I remember my first is very small too — 256MB KVM at some place with logo of cat or bird or something jajaja — I wrote long post about this but deleted because too emotional — the short version: we are old now — the young ones with their 4GB minimum is very spoiled — ¡¿do you still have the provider control panel screenshot?! — in my experience is very the control panel the most nostalgic part — VNC java applet crashing always — https://solusvm.com
Actually I also had one of these early OpenVZ Containers and it actually ran for three Years without a single Reboot which actually says something about the Stability or maybe about my Laziness or? Actually the Provider was called something with an Animal and they actually had a very nice Control Panel that was actually custom built and the Support actually answered Tickets within Minutes which actually never happens anymore with the big Providers or? Actually I think the whole Industry has actually lost something when everyone actually moved to these automated Systems without actual Humans or?
🪦
128MB lol
Nice
Wow
I joined team in 2019 but still remember my first test order — sent ticket yesterday to colleague about this thread actually! We still have some customers from 2015 on their original plans, never migrated. Is bittersweet, no? The hardware dies but the accounts stay. I made test order last week at competitor just to see their onboarding — not same feeling. Cheers to ten years, and to the next ten!
Ten years! Insane value what we got back then!
Now my Ampere Altra Max idles at 45W with 128 threads — runs circles around that old stuff. But I get it, the vibe was different. Specs for the curious: 128 cores, 256GB RAM, still costs less per year than that old VPS did per month adjusted for inflation. Progress!
1) emotional response to this thread
A) nostalgia: high
B) sadness: moderate
C) hope: present
2) technical observations
A) 128MB was genuinely enough for:
I) irc
Ii) static site
Iii) learning
B) modern equivalent would be:
I) free tier somewhere
Ii) oracle arm always
3) personal data
A) first vps: 2014
B) provider: dead
C) screenshot status: lost
I) regret: maximum
I still have my first welcome email too, the attachment limit was 2MB
Haven is still around and takes XMR last I checked. No KYC under certain thresholds if you time it right. I run a 512MB there for a monitoring node, costs less than a coffee in Lisbon. The vibe is not the same though -- no waiting three days for anything, everything is instant now and somehow that makes it feel cheaper even when it is not.
Good looking out. Their network was kind of meh last time I tried but that was 2022, probably improved. The XMR thing is mostly for the principle anyway -- my bank flags "VPS" in the memo now like it is a crime. Colombia things.
Still have that welcome email in a folder called "ancient" next to my first mining pool payout from 2014. The nostalgia folder grows faster than my server count at this point.
