Ten years of learning from this community

Ten years ago I SNAPPED UP my first €4/mo VPS plan from some fly-by-night called Contabo and stumbled in here screaming about disk space limits. You all roasted me. Then you taught me.

I still have bookmarks from threads that changed everything:

- The 2016 OVHcloud NVMe thread where @SiteRita explained rsync flags I still use daily
- @ellagee91's five-part nginx guide that... never actually ended... but got me running
- @reykjavik_doc insisting I learn systemd first (annoying, correct, still bitter)

This place turned a deal-chaser into someone who actually understands why their stack falls over. The folklore here is better documentation than most hosts provide.

What thread made you who you are? What old knowledge should we write down before the next server wipe?

Svendeal I am coming back to this thread now...

2016 OVHcloud thread... I am remembering it like yesterday... is it? The rsync --delete flag that eat someone's backups... we are learn together that day...

My own greatest hit: the 2019 Vultr migration where we are go go through 40 pages of logs... the community is build knowledge there...

Ten years... is it? Time is fly...

The nginx guide. I am still writing it in my head. Every time I touch a config. The ssl certbot section alone. Five hours I spent on that. Then rita found the typo in line 47. Line 47. Can you imagine.

Other threads that shaped me. The 2018 debian vs ubuntu wars. I am reading all 200 posts. Never posting once. Just absorbing. The knowledge was in the arguments. Not the conclusions.

These days I am check check my own old posts for commands I forget...

What a wonderful thread! I joined in 2020 when Hetzner had that massive outage and this place was the only source of real info. Sent ticket yesterday, got auto-reply, came here and found actual workaround in 10 minutes!

For me it was the DNS propagation thread from 2021. Made test order on three providers just to compare. Community here saved me so much money and headache!

I try to pay it forward now. Cheers!
