Family needs Chile IP for streaming, looking at Santiago VPS options. Found CloudCone and HostHatch both advertising "unmetered" but the fine print says 2TB then throttle to 10Mbps. Need actual unlimited or this becomes a pagerduty incident at my house every weekend. Transparency on real bandwidth policies seems low across the region. Anyone found a provider with honest error budgets on this? Blameless postmortem will be me explaining to my dad why his football froze.

Thank you for raising this. We do not operate in the Santiago region, but as a general advisory: always verify whether "unmetered" refers to port speed or transfer allowance. Several providers in South America structure tiers as follows:

  • 2TB at 1Gbps, then hard cap
  • 2TB at 1Gbps, then 10Mbps unmetered
  • True unmetered at 100Mbps (premium tier, typically 3x base price)

We have observed this pattern across multiple markets. If you find a provider with clear published transfer pricing, we would welcome that data point. — Admin

Lol 2GB for a streaming proxy is plenty, CPU is nothing, the bottleneck is always bandwidth. I run a similar setup on my home lab (128GB Threadripper, humblebrag) and the proxy process uses like 400MB. The unlimited tier at 3x is standard, you're paying for the 95th percentile commit. Impatient answer: just buy the unlimited tier and stop overthinking.

Hello, I make a server up with GreenCloudVPS in Santiago last year for similar reason. Their unlimited tier exists but yes, cost is 3x. However, they have "media" plan in middle with 5TB and no throttle, maybe enough for family? Regards. Also, if you need help with proxy config I use wireguard + squid, works good.

Yeah I went through this last year CloudCone unlimited is real but hurts the wallet ended up on their 5tb plan like @MARIA3 said was enough for my parents streaming actually HostHatch I heard throttles harder, avoid anyway good luck with the family tech support

Actually, 2TB at 1Gbps then 10Mbps is NOT unmetered. HostHatch's fine print matters.

Thanks all. @MARIA3 that 5TB plan might actually work — I modeled it out and at 4Mbps average stream we're looking at ~1.8GB/hr, so 5TB is roughly 900 hours. Football season plus some series, probably lands under that. Still annoyed I have to do capacity planning for my dad's TV habits but here we are.

@HeadRich 2GB RAM is plenty, sure, but the unlimited tier at 3x from a provider with one LA datacenter and no actual Santiago presence doesn't help me. Need the Chile IP.

This. I spent an afternoon last month comparing six providers claiming "Chile" locations. Three were actually Miami with GeoIP spoofing. Two were reselling Cogent capacity with no local peering. Only one had actual transit in Santiago and they didn't sell to individuals.

The "unmetered" language is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that market.

I check now my GreenCloudVPS panel, the "media" plan is 5TB but only in Los Angeles, not in Santiago location. I am sorry, I confuse this. In Santiago they have only standard plans with 2TB or unlimited tier. Very sorry for bad information.

For true Chile IP maybe look to local providers? I know Vultr has Santiago but they are expensive.

Vultr Santiago starts at $5 but bandwidth is $0.01/GB over 2TB. At your 5TB usage that's $30 in overage, so $35 total. Not sniper-worthy.

Haven't seen anything under $1/GB/yr with clean Chile IP. The market is thin.
