If you queue ten files

Who queues ten files on a plex server? This is not a render farm.

My nephew's ryzen sits at 55W idle doing nothing 22 hours a day. My xeon sits at 45W. The transcode duty cycle is maybe 5%.

You are optimizing the wrong variable.

In Poland we have TOU pricing. Night kWh is 0.08 EUR, day is 0.18 EUR.

I run my e5-2680v2 transcodes at 2 AM. The power cost argument is irrelevant if you schedule.

Ryzen 3600 costs more to buy, more to replace when DDR4 dies. Xeon DDR3 is disposable.

Lol try that in Quebec we pay 0.07 CAD flat rate all day because hydro

My Hetzner shared plex box costs more than the electricity for a local server would cost lmao

But I still rent it because my apartment has no space for a tower and my landlord is a cop about breaker panels lol

42U and still growing

Same in Zagreb. Old building, 10A breakers. I run e5-2680v2 at my mother's house where nobody checks.

She thinks the hum is the refrigerator. It has been three years.

This is the real thread right here

New Jersey PSEG rates went to $0.19/kWh this year. My whole basement lab got moved to a friend's barn in Sussex County on solar.

The xeon stayed. The ryzen gaming rig stayed home. Priorities.

grabs popcorn, checks /r/drama

Hong Kong electricity is $0.18 USD/kWh and apartments are 400 sq ft. No basement, no barn, no friend's solar.

I run jellyfin on a Hetzner CX21 in Falkenstein. Ping is 180ms but I only need one stream. I used https://www.hetzner.com/cloud for that.

Self-hosting is a geography privilege.

Wellington fiber is good but international bandwidth is expensive. I had a Contabo VPS in Singapore, latency was 120ms, unusable for plex.

Switched to local VPS provider at 3x the price. Sometimes the cheap global option is not the cheap local option.

Following this thread for the power numbers though.

WireGuard tunnel to my mother's place in Taichung. Plex through tunnel, 40ms. She has fiber and does not use it.

The e5-2680v2 is in my closet in Taipei. Power is NT$2.5/kWh, about $0.08 USD. I do not care about 45W vs 88W.

I care that the ISP does not see my library.

Jakarta is similar. My e5-2680v2 at Hostinger colo in Jakarta was costing more in shipping than the server was worth.

Now it is in my cousin's print shop. He does not know. The fans drown in the copier noise.

Not at these rates. Never.

Brussels has strict WEEE disposal rules. You cannot just throw a server in the bin.

The hidden cost of old Xeon is proper recycling. I paid €35 to dispose of a dead motherboard last year.

Ryzen platform will last longer before disposal. Factor that in.
