Monthly for anything new, but I did 3-year prepay with Linode back in 2019 before the Akamai thing. Still running, still solid. Would I do it today? Probably not. The acquisition changed something in the support quality.

Akamai didn't change the network path though. Still good from Rotterdam. I keep them monthly now because the price stayed the same but the feeling didn't.

Following this thread closely. I'm all monthly but thinking about yearly for a Stockholm-based provider that's been around since 2015. The discount is 20%. Worth it?

Rule of thumb: annual discount should beat what you'd earn leaving the money in a savings account. At current rates, 20% is decent. But provider risk is not priced like a bank deposit. Your call.

In France we have legal protections for consumers on prepaid services. I would never prepay 5 years but 1 year is manageable, you can sometimes get partial refund through chargeback if they disappear. Not legal advice, just experience.

Does anyone actually use those provider review sites? Every "top 10 VPS" list looks like affiliate spam to me. I just come here.

My renewal strategy is simple: monthly for GPU instances because the price drops every 3 months anyway. Consumer GPU hosting is a race to the bottom. Prepaying yearly on a 3090 rig in 2024 would look stupid now.
