Renewal guarantees are meaningless without exit clauses

I am a lawyer in Amsterdam who also runs infrastructure. I read TOS documents for entertainment. Here is what I found in Vultr's "Price Lock Guarantee."

The guarantee, from memory, says something like your renewal rate will not exceed the rate at time of initial purchase.

But I think there is another part of the same clause, maybe in their ToS or AUP somewhere, where Vultr reserves the right to terminate service with 30 days notice rather than renew at guaranteed rates.

Translation: They cannot raise your price. They can simply end your service. No exit clause requires them to facilitate migration. No prorated refund. No data portability timeline.

I checked six other providers:
- Contabo: Same structure, buried somewhere in their terms
- InterServer: Explicit termination right, 14 days notice
- HostHatch: No termination right, actual lock (exception)
- Hostinger: 30 days, plus $150 "early termination fee" if YOU leave

The community has been reading the guarantee and feeling safe. Worth checking the termination sections too, from what I recall. The guarantee is a marketing shell.

To be honest: I am more annoyed that I did not spot this pattern five years ago.

I cannot believe this I have been with Contabo since 2019 and I always told everyone the price lock was why I stayed and now you're telling me they can just terminate me and I remember in 2021 when my server went down and I had oatmeal for breakfast with blueberries and my cat Mr whiskers sat on the keyboard and the weather was rainy that day and I thought the outage was related to the storm but it wasn't and I wrote a ticket and they took four hours and I thought that was good service and now I feel like an idiot for not reading section 22.1 and who even number sections like that and I bet nobody reads these things and that's how they get you and I'm so angry right now and I tried to tell my husband but he was watching soccer and didn't care and I spent all evening looking at the TOS and it's exactly like you said and I can't even get a refund probably and what about my data I have ten years of email archives on that server and photos and everything and now they could just pull the plug in thirty days and I would have nowhere to go because everyone else does the same thing except HostHatch and I looked at HostHatch and their prices are double and I can't afford that and this whole industry is a scam and I swear I'm going to complain to the bbb or whoever regulates this and I hope you all read the whole thing because this is important and I'm not crazy

Actually this is basically the same in japan, ne 契約の更新拒否権 is standard in hosting contracts there too. (´・ω・`) I never noticed until now. Lawyer, thank you for the heads up. But how do we actually protect ourselves? Just use HostHatch? Their spec looks weak though.
