Poll: Auto-renew everything, manual review, or spreadsheet tracking?

Curious about community habits here. At Contabo they see all three patterns, and I'm wondering what actually works at scale for personal portfolios.

My current setup:

  • Auto-renew: core business domains
  • Manual review: experimental/project domains
  • Spreadsheet: expired inventory for resale

What do you use? Any horror stories?

Contabo has solid TTL management at least. But propagation matters more than renewal method.

Check your resolver first. Some registrars cache expiration dates wrongly.

My system: dig the whois, parse expiry, cron job emails me at TTL/2. 86400 default? Email at 43200 seconds out. Simple. Propagation-aware.

In my country, banking is unreliable for auto-renew. I use spreadsheet with expiration dates. Check weekly. Lost one domain to forgetfulness in 2019. Never again.

The ticket said "URGENT: DOMAIN EXPIRED, CUSTOMER THREATENING LEGAL ACTION"

Their system: panic-checking emails daily. No calendar. No spreadsheet. Just raw anxiety and F5.

I asked how many domains. Forty-seven. Forty-seven domains and the renewal strategy was "hope I see the email."

Medium deadpan post. No emoji.

reported. resolved. repeat.

SPREADSHEET GANG RISE UP

Tracked a.io from $12/yr to $45/yr, SNAPPED IT UP at $12 before the hike, spreadsheet caught it

Contabo had a.net sale last March, €8.99, my sheet pinged me, BOOM

Auto-renew is for people who don't love the game 🏃
