Latency matters for editors too. I benchmarked nano vs vim startup on my VN VPS, nano wins by 40ms. Not nothing when you open files hundred times per day. Modal editing saves keystrokes, mode switching costs brain cycles. Tradeoff depends on how often you context-switch.
