The fruit-on-pizza conflict and vi versus emacs share a common structure: both are about refusing reasonable defaults in favor of user-configurable complexity that optimizes for a specific edge case. Pineapple adds sweetness to balance salt; vi modal editing reduces keystrokes for touch-typists. Both require defending a non-obvious choice to stakeholders who prefer the path of least resistance.
I have watched SPF/DKIM/DMARC arguments follow identical patterns. "Just use the default" versus "I need granular control." The reasonable default camp wins until they need the granularity.
