OVH Strasbourg fire aftermath, still affecting supply

Is rsync to a friend's box actually reliable enough?

More reliable than "GitHub and prayers." Less reliable than actual business continuity.

The family fiber thing works if your family has business-grade connectivity and doesn't reboot their router because Netflix is slow. Most don't. You're better off with two cheap VPSes in different Hetzner regions than one "enterprise" anything with no backup.

I use Falkenstein primary, Helsinki secondary. €8.40 total. Restic for backups, tested monthly.

Following this thread closely. We had 12 dedis with OVH in Roubaix, not Strasbourg, but it made us audit everything. Moved 6 to Hetzner Ashburn for US-facing stuff. The rest stay in GRA.

One thing nobody mentions: OVHcloud's billing portal during the fire. Couldn't even see which servers were affected for two days. Their API was up but the dashboard was useless.

YES. I was refreshing like a maniac. Their API returned "status: ok" for boxes that were literally charcoal. I only knew because a guy in the Discord was posting drone footage.

OVHcloud support ticket finally answered on day 4. Template response. "We understand your frustration." No, you don't. My frustration has a billing address. — https://status.ovhcloud.com

This is why I went with KnownHost for managed stuff. Actual phone number, actual human picks up. Costs more than OVHcloud but when my Strasbourg box had a RAM issue they had it swapped in 90 minutes.

You pay for the fire, or you pay for the insurance. Pick one.

KnownHost's good until you need more than 2TB storage. Then their dedicated pricing gets silly. I ended up at Hetzner for the storage boxes, €10.60 for 5TB. No phone support, no hand-holding, but the disk spins and the price is the price.

Different tools for different jobs.

Has anyone actually gotten their OVHcloud credit yet? The "gesture of goodwill" thing? I filed the form, got the auto-ack, silence since. Not chasing it, not counting on it. Just curious if it's real or theater.

Gesture of goodwill

In my experience "gesture of goodwill" translates to "we're not liable but here's a coupon so you don't sue." Usually takes 6-8 weeks to process because it's going through Legal, not Billing.

I'd bet money the credit is real but the timeline is "when we get to it." Don't spend it in your head.

reported. resolved. repeat.

Friend of mine did. €340, applied to account after 11 weeks. No email, just showed up in the billing panel. He only knew because he checks obsessively.

DNS propagation is faster than OVHcloud goodwill, and that's saying something.
