OVH fire anniversary, who's still there?

Wasabi has minimum 90 day storage charge, be careful if you rotate frequently. I learned this the hard way, bill was double expected.

For pottery shop lady: ask Hostinger if they offer JetBackup download, you can restore that to any cPanel host. Or just pay $20/year for UpdraftPlus Premium, one-click restore to new WordPress anywhere.

I have one small VPS at Vultr Tokyo. One external USB drive at my apartment. That is all. Fire in France does not reach Japan, and if Tokyo sinks the USB survives maybe.

Simplicity is redundancy too. Fewer moving parts, fewer broken jobs.

In São Paulo we say "backup que não foi testado, não é backup." Same energy.

I use rsync.net for real stuff, they support borg and are boring in good way. No dashboard surprises.

ping so high I wave back

Following this thread closely. I was about to buy OVH because cheapest EU VPS I could find. Now reading about fire and thinking maybe Hetzner Nuremberg instead? Same price basically, and German engineering or whatever.

Is Hetzner actually more reliable or just lucky so far?

They had networking issues in December 2023, some hours. No fire though. I think no provider is "safe," only your backup strategy makes you safe.

Hetzner is good for price. Support is ticket-only, slow. OVH has phone, sometimes useful. Both are budget tier, both can break.

Under $15 total

Ok lor not bad. I pay SGD 12 for single DigitalOcean now, maybe I should split to two cheap instead. DO Singapore has been solid for me but one region is one region.

Thanks for numbers, helps me think.

Thank you everyone especially jar_dude and rosejack. I will try the VirtualBox thing this weekend, and look at UpdraftPlus too. My pottery is not NASA but it pays my rent and I don't want to lose it because I was scared of testing.

This thread scared me straight in a good way.
