As said, the registry removed price caps effective last week. To be honest, I ran the numbers immediately.

Current renewal at my registrar: $12.40/year
Projected pricing trajectory (conservative 10% annual hike post-cap):

  • 2026: $13.64
  • 2027: $15.00
  • 2028: $16.50
  • 2029: $18.15
  • 2030: $19.97
  • 2031: $21.96
  • 2032: $24.16
  • 2033: $26.58
  • 2034: $29.24
  • 2035: $32.16

Total decade cost: $217.76 vs. Old capped trajectory of ~$124. Difference: $93.76 per domain. I hold 14 .org domains. $1,312.64 surprise over ten years.

Migrating five critical ones to .net tonight. Remaining nine under evaluation. Bullet list for migration specs:

  • Vultr: $9.20 .net transfer, no hike history
  • Contabo: €8.90, but renewal jumps year three
  • Hetzner: €11.00 flat, to be honest likely winner

TLD trust is a marketing fiction. The graphs don't lie.

U ever pay $35 for a .com and felt lucky :-) .org was the poor man's TLD, now its the rich man's burden lol

Seriously tho I moved my retro archive to a .info last month. $3.99, works on my 56k vhosts fine. Nobody cares what TLD you use if the content is good. My bbs ran on a .org from 1998-2003, cost more in the phone bill than the domain :-)

U r overthinking this bro. But I admire the spreadsheet energy. Back in my day we called that "using a calculator" and it was a physical object you held in your hand :-)

@pieter_rtm I checked our .org pricing just now—sent ticket yesterday to confirm, no response yet but made test order on new .net and transfer went smooth! No price hike planned for 2026 at least.

To be honest I think .org still has some trust with nonprofits, but for personal projects? Not worth the premium anymore. I moved two last night, three more this weekend.

Contabo has been stable for me, but Hetzner flat rate is good deal if you plan long term. Let me know if you need transfer codes, I have some notes from my last migration.
