In Italy we have ARUBA and Register.it that lock you in with .it domain bundles. The VPS is cheap first year, expensive second, and migration means losing the domain pricing. Different trap, same result.

Fair hit. I do bill those hours to my employer's infrastructure budget though, not personal time. Makes the math different but maybe hides the true cost.
Brazilian providers like Locaweb and UOL Host have intro pricing but they also have "fidelidade" clauses with early termination fees. You cannot just leave. The US model of free churn is exotic to me.

Same here. Retention email seems lower effort than ansible rewrite.
