Wey I got vps with some host in casablanca, supposed to be close to my users right? But ping from my cousin's flat in hay hassani is 180ms. From my server in paris I get 45ms.

This makes no sense. I traceroute and the morocco path goes to marseille first then back to casa. Like why?

My users are in morocco, my server is in morocco, but the cable wants to see france first. Colonial routing or what?

Anyone else got this stupid path?

It is my humble opinion that perhaps this phenomenon reflects the historical topology of submarine cable landing points rather than deliberate policy. Let us examine the routing tables with humility. I apologize for any presumption in offering this perspective.

It is my humble opinion that perhaps the lack of domestic IXPs in the region necessitates such paths. Let us hope for infrastructure investment without assuming negligence.

I see this too with my .ma clients. The traffic goes to Marseille because that is where the cable lands, and from there to the French IXP, then back. There is no direct path inside Morocco for this.

Vale, you can check with looking glass from HostHatch Madrid and compare. Por cierto, I know an engineer from CloudCone who told me the Casa-Marseille fiber is owned by a consortium that prefers to terminate everything in France. O sea, business decision, not technical.

20 years in this business and I have seen this pattern across the whole Maghreb. Back when I ran fiber in Algeria it was the same story. The cable lands in Marseille because that is where the money was. The national telecoms never built proper domestic peering because they could bill international transit instead.

Kids these days think latency is about distance. It is about who owns the pipe and where they want it to go. Mark my words: this will not change until some submarine cable bypasses France entirely, and the incumbents will fight that with every regulatory trick they have learned.

Pessimistic prediction: your .ma site will still route through France in 2035.
