I got 40% off my renewal at OVHcloud by asking. Here is the exact method.
Timing matters. Contact them 30-45 days before renewal, not after. Sales teams have quotas and retention targets. Before renewal you are a flight risk. After renewal you are locked in.
Script I used: "I am comparing options for my next billing cycle. Contabo quoted me $X for similar specs. Can you match or should I migrate?" — I used https://contabo.com/en/vps/ as the comparable.
They matched and beat by 10%.
Other tips: - Mention specific competitor pricing - Ask for "price lock" not "discount" - Accept longer term in exchange
I have used this at three providers now. Success rate 60%.
dig proof for timing claim: MX records for support at OVHcloud show TTL 86400, meaning their ticket system resolves once daily. But propagation of your request through their org takes 3-5 business days minimum. Check your resolver before assuming they ignored you. I traced route to their billing dept once: 14 hops, 2 were internal routers with 200ms latency. Patience is a DNS record.
Back in my day we had T-1s and you called your account rep on the telephone. Now it's all someone else's computer and you beg through a ticket system. Tried this on KnownHost last month. Their ethernet to the cloud was slow anyway. Got 15% off but had to commit to 2 years. Grumble grumble. Still better than paying rack rates.
My $3 HostHatch YABS: 1800 single core. 3200 multi. Your negotiated OVHcloud deal at €8 with 40% off is still €4.80 for worse disk IO. My VPS beats your "savings". Numbers dont lie. Negotiation is for people who overpay.
