If the LowEndTalk thread goes quiet and the owner stops posting, I move

Abuse desk view: the hosts that vanish fastest are the ones where the owner was the whole operation. One person doing sales, support, and billing. No community presence means no accountability mechanism.

I've seen "companies" with 2000 customers and one employee. When that person burns out or gets a real job, 2000 people learn about backup testing the hard way.

reported. resolved. repeat.

Toronto SaaS ops. We formalised this: quarterly vendor health review. Not just hosting—any critical supplier.

Metrics: response time trend, changelog frequency, executive LinkedIn moves, Glassdoor sentiment if they have staff. Sounds corporate but takes 30 minutes and has saved us twice.

Applied to hosting: if the founder's LinkedIn adds "seeking new opportunities," you have months, not years.

Has anyone compiled this into a checklist? The thread's great but scattered across DNS, kernels, billing, routing, RIPE...

I'd pay for a monitoring service that aggregated this. Not expensive—just automated the checks and emailed a weekly score.

Don't. These signals are intentionally distributed. Any single service that centralised them would itself become a target, a point of failure, and probably a data broker.

Build your own. Three scripts, a cron job, and a spreadsheet. The work of maintaining it is part of the signal—you notice when your own checks break.
